About Dynamism!

After more than a century, the modernist experiment still captures the imagination. With their art full of audacity, creativity and drive for change, avant-garde artists turned the whole world upside down. At the same time, little seems to have changed. The fundamental questions these artists posed are still waiting to be answered.

Behold the challenge of Dynamism!, a project by the Paul van Ostaijen Society in collaboration with numerous public and private partners.

A new narrative
Dynamism! (re)tells the story of Flemish modernism. With exhibitions, events and publications, Dynamism! charts the literary and artistic innovation drive in Flanders. With an eye for the specific context in which this art was created and the (social) quest it triggered. It thus becomes clear that the development of Flemish modernism is an exciting, partly even unique case within the international avant-garde.

Collaborations
Dynamism! is a series of (increasingly extensive) exhibitions and events in the period 2024-2028. To this end, Dynamism! establishes partnerships with museums and other cultural and research institutions.

Centre of expertise and coordination
Although art from the interwar period is prominent in numerous museums, the overwhelming majority of the work rests in private collections and Flemish modernism is not systematically researched. Partly to meet a need recognised by professionals in the field, Dynamism! positions itself among the institutions and thus assumes the role of a flexibly deployable expertise and coordination centre.

Storylines
Together with the teams of the institutions involved, the researchers and storytellers of Dynamism! develop thematic storylines that increase knowledge and understanding of Flemish modernism. It is the declared ambition of Dynamism! to show well-known work in a new context, to open up unknown heritage to a wider audience and to present all this in a new narrative that will resonate far beyond national boundaries.

Van Ostaijen Year 2028
The storylines set out by Dynamism! in the period 2024-2028 will come together in the Van Ostaijen Year 2028. An international exhibition at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp and a music theatre performance by Opera Ballet Flanders will form the central pillars of a festival focusing on artistic (and social) renewal in Flanders.
