CATALOGUE – Music-Hall. Paul van Ostaijen and the soundtrack of the roaring twenties
With his debut collection Music-Hall, Paul van Ostaijen took Dutch-language literature into the modern world in 1916. But what was going on in that music-hall? And why were Van Ostaijen and so many artists so fascinated?
Life in the music-hall set creative minds in motion because it was a place of contradictions. Old and new, tradition and innovation intermingled here. An evening at music-hall consisted of music, folk theatre, film and dance. You could even bump into a harlequin there.

Music-Hall is an ode to this versatility. Dance along to the sounds of music from the roaring twenties and experience how decisive the influence of popular culture was on the breakthrough of modern art in Flanders.
